Is It Worth It To Hire A WordPress Developer?

We may earn money or products from the companies mentioned in this post.

If you are trying to decide if it is worth it to hire a WordPress developer, there are only a few factors to consider to help you make this decision. As with any task, if your time investment involved in building a website is going to ultimately cost you more money, then working with a developer might be the best decision.

My most memorable example of the cost of a website was when I was working in advertising for a supermarket chain that needed a website and had no interest in building one. Nor did they have to take on this task as the company could easily afford to have the website made.

I can say that there are times when it is definitely worth letting the professional developers do the work. This discussion is not actually in line with this blog as we are not talking about a startup in this situation.

I just thought it was worth mentioning the large range of costs when it comes to getting a website for your company. It also means that you should be very careful about who you hire.

There are some individuals who will claim to be WordPress developers when they simply build WordPress websites completely with prescripted code. They just upload themes and add plugins.

This supermarket, approximately 20 years ago, spent $12,500 on its website. The cost might be less today; however, with the added technology used by many large companies, it could even be more.

Again, I will stick to startups, but this shows just how big the range can be when it comes to the cost of developing a website from scratch.

The following article is a great summary of affordable website expenses when starting a business and not using a developer:

It comes down to the size of the company (database) the required functionality for the particular industry it will be serving, and the cost of hiring a graphic designer and any other IT specialists that might be required. So here are the two main factors to consider when deciding if it

is worth it to hire a WordPress developer:

1. How knowledgeable are you when it comes to the general functions involved with working online?

This includes basic skills such as typing, copying, pasting, and working with the WYSIWYG editor to create online content.

With WordPress being a user-friendly interface, and not requiring coding almost anyone can create a WordPress website without the help of a WordPress developer.

Sure, some knowledge about HTML and CSS would be helpful but it is absolutely not necessary since there is a workaround for almost every coding situation you will encounter using the WordPress CMS platform.

2. Do you enjoy doing technical work online? Having to know how to use a computer (compared to years ago) has become all but a requirement to function in our technically advanced society.

That being said, some individuals have no interest in computers at all, so don’t bog yourself down with a task that you will dread.

Typically, if the interest level involving a particular project is low, the completion of the project is often delayed considerably and the quality of work will likely not be as good. If you can afford to, it is better to stick to what you enjoy doing.

I want to reiterate that this website is about building a basic startup business website so presumably, if you have an interest in the topics on this site, you are likely interested in building your own self-hosted website.

Hope this helps you decide whether or not it is worth it to hire a WordPress developer. When hiring, it is best to get a recommendation from someone you trust or who has had a good experience with a particular developer.

Being that you will be hiring a developer remotely, this is one more reason to get references before hiring and see some of the work he or she has done.

Typically, one look at a website created by a developer will tell you right away if the layout and graphic design are going to work with your business model.
